Choosing Distance
What made Cocteau Twins important was not just how they sounded, but how they changed the way people listened. At a time when many alternative bands were still tied to anger and coolness, they slowed everything down. They treated the voice less as something to explain meaning, and more as an instrument for feeling.

For listeners, her voice did not demand understanding. You could simply let it wash over you, allowing emotion to arrive before thought.

That approach opened a new kind of intimacy. It allowed listeners to bring their own emotions into the music in textures, rather than receive someone else’s story fully formed.

Somewhere else in the world, years later, another artist was listening and inspired. In a different language, in a different cultural moment, she moved through her songs almost like a stream of quiet, passing thoughts.
